“In the end, we will conserve only what we love; we will love only what we understand and we will understand only what we are taught.”

– Baba Dioum

Welcome to the event organizer and coordinator hub!

Thank you for your interest and effort to bring your community together to experience, appreciate, learn about, and take action for our ocean! Our goal is to have everyone across Aotearoa New Zealand engaged with Seaweek, learning about and experiencing our incredible ocean environment. We could not do this without YOU!

We’ve gathered these resources to help guide your journey in creating Seaweek events that align with our mission, enhance your community and reflect your unique assets. We aim to help you deliver programmes that promote access by removing financial, cultural or other barriers so you can build appreciation, awareness and skills that empower participants to keep learning and make meaningful changes.

“People are friendly and accommodating; it’s free as it’s our first time to try such a thing as family; kids being outdoors and meeting a community; and the learning and experience they gained on the activity.”

“At the end of collecting all the rubbish we could stand around and look at all of the rubbish we collected as a whole.”

Seaweek 2026: The ocean and humans are inextricably interconnected

Our seas are our survival: The ocean makes life on Earth possible. It’s critical that people feel connected to the environment and are empowered with knowledge and skills to protect and restore it.

This year Seaweek will focus on Ocean Literacy Principle #6: The ocean and humans are inextricably interconnected. This theme compliments our Ngā Kōrero III Series and highlights the human connection to the ocean. We recently developed a guide to support educators in building ocean literacy in their classrooms. Many of these activities can also be incorporated into community events.
