Celebrate Seaweek with a free guided snorkel or rockpool at Aotearoa’s oldest marine reserve!
Discover huge tāmure (snapper), red moki, eagle rays, kōura (crayfish) and more! What secrets are the kina hiding? Why are the rimurimu/seaweeds so important? Where do all the fish go at night? Safe fun for the whole whānau, all equipment provided including an experienced guide! Learn about our wonderful marine ecosystems as well as how to snorkel and stay safe in the water!
The team from Te-Hāwere-a-Maki Goat Island Marine Discovery Centre will also be running a Rockpool Adventure! Explore the incredible wonders of our rocky shore, meet motu Hāwere rockpool locals and learn about the fascinating roles they play in a highly stressful environment, right in our big blue backyard. Sign-ups will be available on the day, with places limited.

Registering on Eventbrite does not guarantee you a spot, it helps us gauge interest. Our snorkel days operate on a first come, first served basis. On high demand days we may not be able to take everyone snorkelling – this is due to volunteer capacity.

10:30 – 12:00 – Rotation 1 – Snorkelling
12:30 – 14:00- Rotation 2 – Snorkelling
14:00- 15:30 – Rotation 3 – Snorkelling
13:30 – 15:30 – Guided rockpooling
Please aim to arrive 15 minutes prior to the rotation start time. When you arrive, check in at the tent. If you are late you may not be able to take part.
🏠 Where – Goat Island Marine Reserve, Goat Island Road, Leigh, Auckland 0985
There is no parking immediately around the event area, you will need to park up the road at the Goat Island lookout. We encourage carpooling, there is no public transport to this event. Please do not park at the Marine Discovery Centre.
🌞 Weather call:
Conditions permitting – we will run with light rain. Postponement due to weather will be communicated via email or Eventbrite.

Accessibility – Snorkelling involves wearing fins and a mask and snorkel. You can not wear glasses under the mask. If you are physically unable to wear fins please speak to a crew member when signing in. There are individual toilets as well as changing rooms on site. You will need to travel over grass/sand/uneven ground.

💰 Donations – Mountains to Sea Conservation Trust runs a series of free and subsidised events over the summer months — we rely on your support to make them happen. We appreciate donations, either cash/eftpos on the day, online or by giving a koha of your time volunteering at a future event.

If you are feeling unwell (sore throat, running nose, loss of taste/smell) please let us know prior as soon as possible. You will not be able to attend the event.
