Seaweek World Ocean Day Sunset Swim

8th June to 8th June, 5pm-5:30pm

World Ocean Day is coming up on 8 June!

The theme this year is focused around Marine Protected Areas aligning with goals of protecting 30% of lands, waters and ocean by 2030 and the recent ratification of the High Seas Treaty. It’s also focused around ‘Reimagining a better future‘.

Seaweek’s mission is to provide opportunities to come together, celebrate, and discover ways our lives are connected to the sea. We think this will be a wonderful occasion to do just that!

This year, Seaweek is taking our annual World Ocean Day sunset swim at the Long Bay-Okura Marine Reserve to a national level! We would love to see communities around Aotearoa coming together at the same time for the same purpose! If you’d like to plan one in your area, email us with the event location, time and link to more details or registration and we’ll add it below!

During or after the event, use the hashtag #SeaweekSunsetSwim to share photos/videos where we can create a collective nationwide view of the celebrations!

We would love to hear your ideas for taking action to increase Aotearoa’s Marine Protected Areas!

Here are some other questions to think about and discuss, see more ideas at UN WOD:

  • What makes you feel connected to the ocean?
  • How can your community move toward more active kaitiakitanga of the moana?
  • What are barriers to protecting our ocean areas and resources locally and nationally?
  • What are some possible solutions and innovations that could move us closer toward Toi Moana ~ Toi Tangata: Healthy seas ~ Healthy people?
  • How do we bring the ocean closer to everyone even if they live inland?
  • How does considering the ocean as Hinemoana with rights of personhood change our viewpoint?
  • How can sustainability and the economy both prosper for a healthier future?
