Celebrate Seaweek at MERC!
Join us on the 28th of February for Sir Peter Blake MERC’s 9th annual Sea MERC Day! We have an exciting day planned filled with water activities, beach and rocky shore exploration, ocean science activities, marine education, food and fun! We will be exploring the ocean-human connection through recreation, learning and celebration at this FREE, family friendly event!
Water session slots will be filled on a first come, first served basis. There are so many fun options throughout the day! Paddling could include our Giant Stand Up Paddleboard (GSUP) and/or kayaks depending on weather conditions. We will also have knee boarding with Surf Lifesaving and shore explorations to choose from! All equipment is provided and sessions are led by experienced guides! Activity sessions will start at 10am, 11am, 12:30pm, 1:30pm and 2:30pm.
All day long we will have opportunities to engage with some incredible organisations including Surf Lifesaving, Clean Below Good to Go and Youth Leaders from the New Zealand National Commission for UNESCO, Sir Peter Blake MERC and more! We will also have craft and ocean learning stations about some of New Zealand’s most iconic sea creatures, plankton and more! Throughout the day we will also have special craft workshops including bock printing with your choice of designs!
There will be a lunch break at 12:30 with a variety of options available for purchase or you can bring your own! MERC’s Coffee Café, Sausage sizzle (vegan/vegetarian option), bake sale, Mövenpick ice cream van all on offer plus some free snacks provided!
In the afternoon we will have hands-on marine science activities and experts on hand to deepen understanding of the many ways humans and the ocean are interconnected. There will be workshops on the ocean environment and plankton, as well as dissections of squid, bony fish and sharks that you can participate in or observe.

Participants of all ages and experience levels are encouraged to join in- there is truly something for everyone! Register for FREE to attend the event in advance, then sign up for the activities you’re interested in once you get here! Be sure to bring your togs, towel, hat, sunglasses, sunscreen, sturdy shoes that can get wet and a reusable drink bottle – we can’t wait to see you there!
