Seaweek is grounded in marine education. Our range of activities include many that are child and family focused, as well as those tailored to educators and parents.
Through empowering educators with ocean literacy skills, we can help more tamariki and rangatahi grow as informed and active young citizens.
Our innate fascination with the ocean can be the perfect connection to weave science, history, culture and other STEAM topics into your curriculum.
Thank you for all you do to enrich the next generation with the knowledge they need to face the many challenges that lie ahead. We have gathered some incredible resources to help you explore the sea from your home or classroom.
Our teaching tools are divided by age group with tools aimed at primary, intermediate and secondary school aged students. Our webinars are excellent for older students and adults of any age. With so many great options, why not make every week Seaweek!

The importance of Marine Education
As an island nation, understanding the ocean is essential. New Zealand’s ocean area is 15 times greater than our land area and holds over 80% of our indigenous species, many of which are threatened. Our ocean is more than a resource—it’s a playground, a classroom, a mode of transport, and a source of inspiration. Marine education helps young people develop a deeper connection to their environment, encouraging curiosity, creativity, and critical thinking. Beyond that, it equips them with the knowledge and skills to address pressing issues like climate change, biodiversity loss, and pollution and fosters a sense of responsibility, empowering the next generation to become stewards of the sea. Short version: As an island nation, understanding the ocean is essential. Marine education helps young people develop a deeper connection to their environment, encouraging curiosity, creativity, and critical thinking.
